In
the afternoon after supper she waited to talk to Victoria privately.
But later she heard that Victoria was going to the farms to make a
visit. Then a maid said to the head cook to prepare a feast because the
Lady will return shortly before dinner and she might accompany some
guests.
Catherine wasn't paying attention to Charlotte.
When she asked again ''Catherine are you feeling unwell?'' ''No I'm
fine. Can we do this tomorrow Madame?'' Catherine decided to be in the
garden and be alone with herself for a while. ''Alright.'' Charlotte
granted her leave. ''Seems like our lady has fallen in love is it Albert?'' Charlotte said coming closer taking a brief look at her face. ''The way you blush like really a girl in love but what is all the stress about my dear. You said to me that I am like your mother then you shouldn't be hiding things from your mother my dear.'' a maid brought tea with cakes.
''Thank you you may leave now I'll make the tea myself.'' Charlotte dismissed the maid.
''It's nothing. It's just the pressure of changes becoming a new woman completely has been giving me stress.'' Catherine took the cup of tea from Charlotte.
''Ah becoming a woman is the most difficult of all things and specially when you have to find the perfect one. I wouldn't advise you anything my dear, why advise? It's ones own journey that one must complete without anyone's help. These experiences are what we become later in life and all of us must experience on on our own.'' she sighed as if speaking to herself.
''Was this the case with you as well?'' Catherine later realized she shouldn't have said all this but too late.
''True I being an only child inherited a great fortune from my father. I was proposed by someone who was a lord, he only wanted to marry me for my wealth. His intentions were revealed to me before marriage. But then I asked myself did it mattered? In this society where women's wealth will be of husband nevertheless. This is the lack of our rights. Not if only work was the problem for us.'' she sighed again and began wiping the mist from her spectacles which was caused by tea.
She recalled the letter,
''Dearest Catherine,
I don't know if you still remember me because you were the spotlight of that night. But I haven't rested even for a single second since I saw you that night. I am not a poet. I am not a lover. I don't know how people can write so much about things when they have seen someone. All I can say is this letter is written by me and I would not lie to you as you are not human. You are a goddess of beauty who has ascended from her throne somewhere in the skies to test the faith of men. I hope now you can remember me better. I look forward to meeting you tomorrow.
A restless worshiper,
And hoping to court you,
Edmund Robinson Shaw.''
Catherine was
looking at the sky as the sun was setting giving orange yellow shades a
mix color to the horizon , someone said in her ear,''One should not be
alone while witnessing such beauty in the horizon.'' She gasped for a
moment. ''Albert my goodness what are.. you doing here.'' Catherine was surprised to see Albert
here in the garden with her alone. ''I'm here to see Lady Victoria you too can
come with me.'' Catherine didn't wanted him to talk to her in front of Victoria specially right now when she would make her angry if she gets upset she might behave not well enough with him.
''You cannot meet her now, why don't you come tomorrow or I'll see you at the same place early.'' she tried to resist him by standing in front of him. ''What's the matter Catherine?'' he was serious this time looking at her sceptically.
''Nothing she and I might have some differences aroused tonight and I am waiting for this act since morning impatiently and I would not let go of this one and I don't want her to treat you on the measure of that subject do you understand what I am talking about?''
He again looked at her suspiciously without saying a word.
''Okay I'll leave but don't forget your promise.'' he kissed her and left.
Catherine sighed in relief.
''Get some people to keep an eye on Edmund.'' he said to a man who was particularly his guard.
''And one more thing, do not mention much of this to uncle understood.'' the guard nodded Albert sat in his carriage and the horses neighed and moved to the road.
''Who was it Catherine I saw a carriage from the window.'' Victoria's voice shocked the lost in though Catherine who had just came in the lounge and was gazing out of the window to make sure Albert has left.
''It was no one milady I think lady Charlotte must have come.'' she was looking down on her hands still finding enough courage to get her dismay out of the throat.
''Hmm come sit with me for a moment and let me summarize how much the girl I brought from Dover has progressed.'' she pointed towards the sofa next to her.
''Dinner is served milady.'' Teresa announced.
''Fine we'll be there.'' she signaled her to leave with her finger.
''You have progressed enough, certainly you have progressed enough to lie and that too straight to my face without even keeping the least bit of respect for me, who is not only your aunt but your guardian and is responsible for you whenever you will come up with the catastrophic repercussion?'' she sighed and looked away at the ceiling then towards a portrait. The portrait as told to Catherine was of Victoria's father, Duke Edward Rochester cousin of his grandfather.
''This is what these adolescents do father, you were blessed to have me and I never in life did anything to bring out the vexation in you.'' she now looked at Catherine who was quiet and looking at her hands.
''Talk to me something don't sit there like a stone.'' she got up and began moving rapidly in the hall.
''Tonight a lot of vexations will arise aunt, and I'm sure you'll be more piqued when I tell you about what I am thinking about.'' she said in her thoughts and cleaned her throat.
''Aunt, I was looking forward to tell you about something which has nothing to do with whatever fury is evolving in you, I was looking forward to talk to you about it and I have unequivocal belief that you will not be pleased with it.'' she said affirmatively.
''Well it's about lord Edmund?'' she said raising an eyebrow.
she nodded in agreement.
''You definitely reject him and his proposal?'' she herself said what Catherine was trying so hard about.
''Come here.'' she hugged her and then cupped her face in her hands.
''I myself don't like that ignorant prick he has a dark past and much more darker future for sure.'' she was relived.
''You were thinking that I would be resentful, but you made me glad. He deserves rejection let us have dinner and forget about all that happened because of him between the both of the three of us.''
Catherine looked at her in disbelief.
''Don't be surprised I know all about Albert. He's a good lad. A great family. ''she took her to the dining hall.
Catherine was overjoyed that Victoria didn't react as she had expected.
Much to her dismay Victoria was thinking how Edmund would bring their ruin if he gets the news of Catherine's rejection.
''Edmund has always got what he wanted. No woman he lays eyes on has survived without getting hurt. I wonder what ruin he will bring for all of us.'' she talked in her heart but didn't showed any sign of fear to Catherine.
''Whatever I have said please don't mention it to Albert or even to Edmund. I request aunt Victoria. I myself will deal with Edmund without involving you both.''
''Why?'' Victoria looked at her blankly.
''He has requested something and I will not in hurriedly do anything. With patience great things are accomplished.'' she smiled.
